Bringing Bioinformatics to Biology Education: 
A Hands-on Workshop to Develop Labs for Introductory and Advanced Courses
San Diego State University, CA (July 28-30)

Selected participants will attend the workshop from Friday, July 28, Morning to Sunday, July 30.Workshop sessions will include interactive discussions and hands-on and computer-based activities. Participants will have opportunities to work in project teams with other undergraduate faculty from across the nation.

Tentative Workshop Format

Prior to Workshop:

  • Orientation for the participants by electronic communication.
  •  Submission of participant background online survey to understand goals and interests of the participants.
  • Guidance to the participants through preliminary explorations so they may come to the workshop with some questions and issues already formulated.

Morning Session ( 9:00 AM - 12noon )
This session will begin with a brief presentation of the Workbench architecture and description of its resources and capabilities. This will be followed by a hands-on tutorial where all participants will use the most widely-used capabilities of the Workbench in a directed manner. Conducted by Eric Jakobsson.

Continuation of hands-on tutorial in the first part of this period. In the second part of the period, group discussion of possible teaching materials whose preparation could be begun during the Workshop.
