CHAPTER 6 SGML/XML:
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
With the advent of Style Sheets and Style Sheet positioning (which allow
text and images to be layered, positioned, manipulated, and formatted as
desired), and with the approach of a standardized DOM (Document Object
Model), and with the current push by major software companies to implement
XSL, and with their push to develop advanced SGML and XML capability, all
computer users will soon be able to reap the full benefits of SGML-spec and
XML-spec documents.
This applies not only to the sciences (an advanced MathML is just around
the corner), but also to the humanities. Using the work of and software
developed by IATH and other humanities computing groups, users -- both
researchers and students -- can analyze artistic works "on the fly", do
complex database search and analysis, display text or images, manipulate or
turn on/off specific content elements as desired (text, images, music,
annotation, etc.), and can even take "virtual tours" through historical
places such as Rossetti's studio.
As SGML and XML become increasingly commonplace in the software market,
they will provide new ways to study and enjoy the humanities.
