CHAPTER 4.5 SGML/XML:

IATH'S ROSSETTI ARCHIVE

IATH's "Rossetti Archive" Home Page is at http://www.press.umich.edu/webhome/rossetti/

(Requires a frames-capable web browser)
or http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/rossetti/rossetti.html
(Less fancy, but doesn't require frames)

IATH's ROSSETTI ARCHIVE

The Rossetti Archive features SGML encodings of the writings and paintings of 19th-century poet and painter D.G. Rossetti. (Pictorial works are marked up with tags which specify medium, dimensions, frame, etc.). The SGML markup includes full scholarly annotations and notes.
The Rossetti Archive's web page features a search function, which relies on the Archive's SGML markup.

The Archive's web site also features a simple "Virtual Reality" model of Rossetti's studio, allowing students to "walk around" inside the studio. (A VRML viewer or plug-in is needed, to view the finished file. The Rossetti VRML file will be in VRML 1.0 format.)

NOTE: The Rossetti VRML file is not generated based on SGML markup. (The Dante VRML file in Chapter 4.3, on the other hand, is generated based on the text's SGML markup). The Rossetti VRML page is being mentioned here in order to showcase some of the capabilities that computers make possible for humanities students and researchers.
