What are Digital Libraries ? Digital Libraries are storehouses of information available throughout the
Internet
that provide ways to collect, store, and organize data and make it available
for
searching, retrieval, and processing. Major applications of digital library
research
and technology include education, science, commerce, medicine, and the arts.
Digital Libraries are a critical component of the emerging "distributed knowledge
environments" that eventually will provide access to virtually all areas of
human
knowledge. Some digital libraries have been built across the world and they
are
accessible to the public. NPACI takes
the leading role in providing integration
technology for digital libraries ( SDSC,
Stanford U. ) as well as building
digital
libraries (Berkeley, UCSB
and U. of Michigan). |
