History of CS 575 Supercomputing
Taught at San Diego State University since 1992 using the
evolving platforms at the San Diego Supercomputer Center:
Cray YMP, Cray C90, Cray T90. Initial computational
experiments are performed on the campus computers which
are now Sun Workstations.
Instructor's goals for course were to facilitate student's
"learning through discovery" to develop undertstanding of skills
needed in computational science, including the effective use of high
performance computers.
- Evaluating Performance of a code
-
- Measuring the amount of work with system CPU timers to
validate known mathematical operation counts
- Measuring the delivered accuracy with known true solution
to validate computed results and
gain familiarity with the effect of floating point arithmetic.
- Validating Computed Results
-
- Problem based checks, e.g. known orbit periodity
- Reasonableness based checks
