Answer(or question to Mentor): This is a test.

Student's Name: John
Answer(or question to Mentor): 1. I think that she had 330 calories. I got that by multiplying 14x9. I multiplied that because if there are 14 grams of fat and 9 calories 14 9 times would give you the amount of fat calories there where. I also multiplied 34 x 6 for the same reason. Finnally I multiplied 4x15 for the same reason and then added them up and got 330.

Answer(or question to Mentor): 2. The answer is 16%. I got that by dividing 330/2000. I divided those numbers because you figure out a percentage by dividing a part you have by the total.

Answer(or question to Mentor): 3. I think the answer is 6%. I got that answer by dividing 123/2000. I divided because you figure out the percentage by dividing a part you have by the total.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challange: We have not learned percentages in math so my dad helped me. We figured out the answer was 36 total. We used estimation to figure out that that 3 was 8.3% of the unkown total of the nuggets.

Mentor Reply: Hi John. Nice job with the first few problems. I really ejoy reading your responses when there is a lot to read. Numbers 1 and two you solved correctly. Thank you for giving me the answer in a percent also. For number 3, try reading the question again. Your method seems right, but the numbers you used are not. Your answer to the challenge problem is right, but could you explain to me you reasoning behind the answer. I would like to read about you whole process involved. Good luck, Tina.

Instructor Comments: Tina,
A good response in terms of catching errors and asking for further elaboration. I do have a few suggestions.
1. You have a typo: ejoy instead of enjoy
2. Why do you enjoy reading his responses when there is a lot to read? Wouldn't it be better to say that you enjoy reading his responses when the outline clearly what his thinking was? It is not the amount of words, but the clarity that should be praised.
3. In giving him a clue for #3, why not explain what he did mathematically, i.e., Your answer of 123/2000 (although I think you may have meant 126?) tells me the fraction of the RDA that was taken up by fat calories, but that is not what the question is asking.
