Thank you for responding. A good way to begin this problem is to draw a picture. Then you can focus on the portion of the pole sticking out of the ground. We know that 1/3 of the piece sticking out of the ground was covered by the storm surge. That leaves 2/3 dry. We also know that 5 feet of the portion sticking out of the ground was left dry. This means that 5 feet must be 2/3 of the portion sticking out of the ground. From here you can figure out how big the portion sticking out of the ground is by finding what 1/3 is and adding it to 2/3 (5ft.) Try to work it out from here. Good luck.

Answer(or question to Mentor): OK. I think I now know what the answer is for problem A, the storm surged 5.25 feet. I got this answer by finding out what 1/3 was. I found this out by saying to myself that there was 5 feet left over, so, since there were 2/3 remaining of the pole then 2/3 is equal to 5 feet. 1/3 is equal to 2.5 feet because if you multiply that by three, you get 7 feet. Since the whole pole is 7 feet I found out what 3/4 of the pole is. 3/4 is 5.25. I got this by finding that 1.75 is 1/4 so you then multiply 1.75 by 3 and get 5.25 feet. Bye.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer for the part B is that there was 1.75 feet left dry. I got this answer by finding out what 1/4 is equal to. I did this because 3/4 of the pole was surged so there was 1/4 left. I already know that the pole is 7 feet long. So, 1/4 of seven feet is 1.75. I found this out by multiplying 1.75 by 4 and you get 7. So 1/4 is 1.75 feet. Bye.

Amy,
Great job on the hint--- it worked!!! Isn't that great? An excellent choice of words too, I think it really helped him understand instead of just saying what to do mechanically.
Alas, he has a small math error, so hope you read this soon and congratulate him on his work and just explain where his small error is so he can fix the answer and the challenge problem.
Great job!

Great job. I am so glad that you understand what is going on in the problem now. Your answer is incorrect, but it was just a small math error. 2.5 times 3 is not 7, it is 7.5. If you plug 7.5 into the problem and follow the same steps you should get the correct answer. I think that you are on track and would like for you to attempt the challenge problem. Good luck.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Ok. The answer for the problem part A is that the storm surged 5.64 feet high. I got his by first, finding out what 2/3 is equal too. I did this becaus in 2000, 2/3 of the pole was dry and 1/3 was wet. It said that 5 feet was dry so 2/3 is equal to 5 feet. And if 2/3 is equal to 5 feet 1/3 is equal to 2.5 feet because if you multiply 2.5 times 2 you get 5. So, the whole pole that is out of water is 7.5 feet. I found out that 1/4 of 7.5 is 1.88. I got this by multiplying 1.88 times 4 and got 7.52 and then just rounded to 7.5. Since 3/4 of the pole was covered than I multiplyed 1.88 times 3 and got 5.64 feet. Bye.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer for part B is 1.88 feet. I got this answer by finding out that the whole pole was 7.5 feet. I got this by findig that since 2/3 of the pole was dry and it said that 5 feet was dry, 2/3 is equal to 5 feet. 1/3 is equal to 2.5 feet and you add those two to get 7.5 feet. 1/4 of the pole was left dry and so, 1/4 is equal to 1.88 feet because if you multiply 1.88 times 4 you get 7.52 and then I just round to 7.5. Bye.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer for #1 is that Charle's cheeseburger has 330 calories. I got this by first multiplying 14 times 9. I did this because 1 gram of fat has 9 calories and there was 14 grams of fat total. After multiplying 14 times 9 I got 126 calories. Then, I multiplyed 36 times 4, and I got 144 calories. I did this because 1 gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories and there was 36 grams of carbohydrates total. After that, I multiplyed 15 times 4 and got 60 calories. I did this 'cause 1 gram of protein has 4 calories and there was 15 grams of protein total. Finally, I added 126,144,and 60, and I got 330 calories in Charle's cheeseburger.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer for the now problem 1 is that Charle has had 16.5% of her daily intake. I got this answer by finding out hom many times 2000 could go into 330. I divided these numbers becasue 2000 is like the base and is the reccomended daily allowence of calories and she has already had 330 calories. When I divided 330 by 2000 and I got .165. When you are trying to find percents and you divide, you always move the decimal over two spots to the right. So, the whole answer is 16.5%.

You did a great job catching the mistake you made in the first submission. Your answer is correct and your explanation is very good. For question number two, you need to find out what percent of the total calories come from fat. You already know from problem 1 that the cheesburger has 330 calories. You also know that 126 of the 330 calories came from fat. You need to find out what percentage of 330 is 126. I hope you can work it out from here. If you get a chance try the challenge problem. Good luck.
Amy
**Hint-- Try working backwards on the challenge problem to find the answer.
