Answer(or question to Mentor): Problem Solution: 1.) 33/200 2.) 31.18% Problem Rationale: 1.) Before I could do any computation, I had to find the amount of calories for each of the values. For Fat there are 126 calories, carbs there are 144 calories, and for proteins there are 60 calories. Add them together to find the total amount of calories consumed and get 330. She is on a 2000 calorie diet, so in fraction form it equals 330/2000. Simplify that and it comes to 33/200. 2.) The question asks for how much of the burger is fat in calories. I put the answer in percent form. There are 126 fat calories and 330 calories in the entire burger. If you divide 330 into 126, you get 318181818…(repeating). When you put it into percent form you get 31.181818181…% Anyways, how vague can we get…? You guess what!? You need to simplify! Yea! Just like almost everything that you do in math. When you simplify it you come to 31.18%. Isn’t that gross! Why waste your money( well only 39 cents) on getting fat? It’s amazing! - Eric Challenge solution: 32 nuggets Challenge Rationale: In this problem I drew a picture. You simply draw for each of the amounts the people consumed. Ralph ate 1/3 of the bucket, then Juan ate ¾ of what was left, then miles ate ½ of what was left. There were then 3 nuggets left. So Now lets go back to Juan. He eats ¾ of what is left, making ¼ left, so if half of one ¼ is = to 3 nuggets, another half is equal to 3, add them and get 6 nuggets. So there is ¼ gone with six nuggets. There are ¾ left. And now that we know that there are 6 nuggets to each forth, you solve. Now we do the math. There are 24 nuggets for Juan, Miles, and Lani. There is one third of the bucket left. One third of 24 is 8. 8+24=32. There are thirty-two nuggets in the bucket that Lani had bought in the first place. And just think… I can barely eat three of those nuggets, without feeling guilty, and gross at the same time. -Eric P.S. _ Hi Petra!

Hey Eric!

Great job on problem 1. Your answer is correct! The only thing that I would suggest for your rationale is to say how you calculated the number of calories for fat, carbohydrates, and protein. For problem 2, I think that you have a calculation error or perhaps a typo. When I divide 330 into 126 I get .38181818, and in percent form that is 38.18%. I understand your rationale perfectly and I know that you understand the problem. Be careful about calculations. (I agree that it gross that the cheeseburger has that much fat. It is a waste of money- even though it is only 39 cents.)

Thanks for trying the challenge problem. Your process is correct until you take one third of 24. In the problem it says that Ralph took 1/3 of the nuggets. If he took 1/3, how much is left? What does 24 nuggets represent compared to the whole?

I can’t wait to hear back from you. Take care.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi petra! Umm...well it is 9:09 in Tennesee right now, and you still haven't responded. So if you would please hurry up, because if I do get this problem wrong I want to respond. To see if I get it the second time. Oh! And A little thing you should know about seventh graders is that They like for the teachers to grade things very quickly so they can just, well, know what they get.
