Answer(or question to Mentor): Solution: I think the answer is a) 8.625 feet
b) 1.375 feet
Rationale: 1/2 of the stilt is 5 feet long.
under ground - 1/4 of the stilt
under water - 1/4 of the stilt
1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 (a.k.a. 1/2)
1/2 x 2 = 10 feet long all together
I divided 10 by 4 = 2.5 because I wanted to find out how much was in 1/4.
(It said that 1/4 was under ground.) Then I found out that 1/4 = 2.5 feet.
Therefore, 2.5 feet was under the ground.
Then I took 2.5 feet away from the total 10 feet so that I got how much was
above ground. I got 7.5 feet.
Then I did 7.5 divided by 4 because it said that 3/4 of the stilt was under
water. I had to find out how much was in 1/4 which was 1.875 and times it
by 3 because there was 3/4.
I got 8.625 feet.
Then to get how many feet were dry, I did 10 - 8.625 and got 1.375 feet. I
subtracted the total amount of the stilt that was coved (8.625), from 10 and
what was left over, or the answer (1.375), was the amount that was still dry.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge Problem
Solution: Yes, because he buried his stilts so that 4 feet of them were in
under ground and that only left 6 feet above the ground. The storm surge in
2002 was 8.625 feet high. When you add 8.625 to 6 you get 14.625 feet.
That is higher than his 10 foot stilts. He got washed away.
Rationale: 40% of 10 = 4
10 - 4 = 6 above the ground
6 + 8.625 = 14.625 feet
14.625 feet > 10 feet

Hello Victoria. Thanks for responding. You did a great job explaining your process but unfortunately you have a calculation error that has caused your answers to be incorrect. In part a of the problem of the week, you said that 1.375 x 3 = 8.625. This is not a true calculation. Try calculating this again. Your explanation is very clear and correct. The only problem with part a is this calculation. When you get the new answer, use it to solve part b and the challenge question.
Here’s a hint for part b: Remember that 1/4 of the 10-foot pole is below the ground. The storm surge in 2002 covered 3/4 of the stilt that was sticking out of the ground.
I’m not sure about one of your steps in the challenge problem. Can you tell me why you added 8.625 and 6? What does 14.625 feet stand for? What does it measure? I found it really helpful to draw a picture when I solved this problem. Perhaps it would help you too. I can’t wait to hear back from you with your new response. Take care.

Petra,
I had a different interpretation of Victoria’s work. Her answer for part A is correct. She said that it was 8.675, which is correct, and she explained her answer very clearly. So, please open with a positive comment such as "Congratulations! Your answer to the first part is correct and your explanation is outstanding." Then go on to explain that because her explanation is so good, it is easy to see where she made one small error: she clearly explains that she subtracted as follows: 10 - 8.625 and that is how she got 1.375 feet. So, her error is not in multiplication, but in copying her original answer. Your hint for part b and your comment about the challenge are both good.

Unless I am mistaken, I think that the answer is 5.625. You are telling me that the answer 8.625 is correct. I am very confused. Eric, one of my other students, said that the answer was 5.625 and you said that was correct too. Please write me back and let me know what I am misunderstanding. Thank you.

You are right. I think I was bonkers at 11:53 pm at night. I couldn't believe that you, of all people, had made a mistake and so I didn't even catch your typo. And, I think I was confusing her first answer with something else. I recall that I was confused, and should have looked more carefully. Sorry about this. The correct answer is indeed 5.625 feet and you are correct in where she made the error.

Victoria-
I’m sorry about the typo in my response. I made a mistake. You did not multiply 1.375 by 3. You multiplied 1.875 by 3 and got 8.625. This is the calculation that I was talking about. 1.875 x 3 does not equal 8.625. Try calculating this equation again and use the answer to answer part b and the challenge problem. Sorry for any confusion. Talk to you soon.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Solution: a) 5.625 feet
b) 1.875
Rationale: 1/4 of the stilt is under the ground. So 3/4 is above ground. 1/3 of what was
out of ground was covered. And 5 feet was dry. I did 5 divided by 2 and got 2.5. Then I
added 2.5 to 5 to get 7.5 as the stilt sticking out of the water. So in 2002 the stilt
sticking out of the ground was 7.5 and 1/4 of it was dry or 1.875 feet. 3/4 was wet. 1.875
times 3 = 5.625 feet.
Challenge
Solution: No Bob’s house was not washed away.
Rationale: the total stilt was 10 feet. 40% was in the ground (4 feet) so 60% was out of
the ground. 60 % of 10 feet is 6 feet. The water rose 5.625 feet and that is smaller than 6
feet. So the house was not washed away.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Solution: 33/200 is how much she has taken in so far.
21/55 is what fration of fat is in the cheeseburger.
Rationale: 14 g of fat = 126 calories
36 g of carbs. = 144 calories
15 g of protien = 60 calories
Then you add the calories together and get 330 calories.
330/2000 = 33/200 of her daily intaake.
126/330 = 21/55 of the cheedeburger is fat.
Challenge
Solution: 72 chicken nuggets to start with.
Rationale: Ralph - ate 1/3
Juan - ate 3/4 of what was left
Miles - ate 1/2 of what was left
Lani - when it got to her there were three left
I just worked backwards.
When Lani got the bucket there were 3 pieces left. I multipiled 3 x 2 and got 6 because
Miles ate half of what was left. Then I multilied 6 times 4 and got 24 because Juan ate
3/4 of what was left. Then I multiplied 24 times 3 and got 72 because Ralph ate 1/3 of
the chicken.

Hello Victoria.
Great job on the problem of the week. Your answers to both of the problems are correct. There is only one part I am unclear on. Could you explain how you calculated the calories for the fat, carbohydrates, and protein? You only stated your conclusions, not your calculations. In your next response could you explain to me how you found the calories?
Thanks for trying the challenge problem. Your process was correct until you multiplied 24 by 3. Why did you multiply 24 by 3? If Ralph ate 1/3 of the chicken, how much was left? What does 24 nuggets represent compared to the whole?
I can’t wait to hear back from you. Take care.
