Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi Nhia, here are my solutions and rationalles to the new problem:
Problem Solution:
a) 5ft 7 ½ in..
b) 1ft 10 ½ in.
Problem Rationale:
pole length solution: To find the length of the pole I did the following: the pole was in the ground 1/4 and had 1/3 covered in water so I found the common denominator which is 12 so 3 parts were covered leaving 9 parts. 1/3 covered the water wich was the ½ way mark on the pole so 5ft was half and so the other half was 5ft also so to get the length you add 5 + 5 and get 10ft.
a) 3/4 of the 7ft 6in ( which is the answer to 1/4 from the 10ft pole) pole above ground was covered in water so to figure that out 3/4 is equal to .75 and you multiply that by 7.5 (7ft 6in. As a decimal) and get 5.625 which in ft and in. would be 5ft 7 ½ in.
B)You add 1/4 of the pole which is 2ft 6in.to 3/4 of the pole which is 5ft 7 ½ in.because that will give you the length of the pole that is in the ground and covered in water and get 8 ft 1 ½ in.and to find out the dry area you subtract that from the length of the pole which is 10ft and get 1ft 10 ½ in.

Answer(or question to Mentor): I realize that some of my conversions i did not explain very well but i converted the fractions into decimals to make it easier and then i converted those into ft and in.

Thank your, for your good explanation. I like how you used common denominator to figure out the answer. I did not think of using common denominator when I solved this problem. Great job.
I did not received your respond for the challenge problem. I assuming that you are working on it. I am looking forward to reading your response.

Nhia,
This is a very sophisticated answer! What a great job this student did. I would open very positively and say "Congratulations, your answers are all correct and your explanations are very clear as well."
You have a few grammar errors, were you able to ask someone in your group to look over your English?
1) It should say "Thank you" Not "Thank your"-- although I hope you will change the opening sentence to the one that I suggested above.
2) Take out the comma after your in above sentence, although again, I hope you will use my sentence anyway.
3) You say "I did not received your respond " Should be" "I did not receive your response".
4) Instead of assuming that she is working on the challenge problem(which is not always a safe thing to do), I would just say, "please submit a response to the challenge problem" I am glad that you learned about the "looking forward to reading" part, I know that is a difficult part of English!

Answer(or question to Mentor): Ok, thank you, here is my challenge solution:
No, because there was 4 1/2 in. left that was dry.
Challenge Rationalle:
Since i figured out in the problem that the stilt was 10 ft long i figured out what 40% was as a fraction which is 4/10 (reduced 2/5) and that is 4ft. since there is 4ft in the ground that leaves 6ft out of the ground and since the storm surged 5ft 7 1/2 in. and that from 6ft leaves 4 1/2 in. so his house did not wash away because there was still a little bit left dry.

Congratulations, your answer is correct. Very smart of you to reduce 4/10 to 2/5. Very good. Keep up the good work.

Dr. Bowers,
Cristin did not submita response. I already sent him an e-mail, but he did not repy neither. What should I do? Should I e-mail him again ro should I just give the solutions?

Answer(or question to Mentor): Here is my Problem Solution:
1. 330 cal.
2. 16.5%
3. about 21 1/2%
Problem Rationalle:
1. Since there is 14g of fat in her cheeseburger and 9 cal. in one g. of fat, you mulitply those together. (which is 126) Then you multiply the number of carbs. in the cheeseburger times the number of cal. in 1 carb. (which is 4cal.)and you get 144 and then you mulitply the 15g of protein in the cheeseburger by 4 since there is 4 cal. in 1 g. of protein and get 60. then you add them all together and it is 330, so the number calories in the cheeseburger is 330.
2. To find the percentage of her daily intake, you wuold divide the 200 cal/day into the number of cal. in her cheeseburger to find out how many she takes in, and the answer is 16.5%
3. To find the percentage of the cheeseburger that is fat, you would add the 14g of fat, 36g of carb., and 15g of protein together which is 65, and divide 65 into 14 since that is the number of grams of fat in the cheeseburger, which is .215384616, that is rounded to about .215 or 21 1/2%
Challenge Solution:
She had purchased 24 chicken mcnuggets.
Challenge Rationalle:
In this problem in order to find the answer you have to work backwards. (something that is not that easy for me! ;) ) we know that there was 3 chicken left, so 1/2 of a number is 3, which is 6. Then 3/4 of a number is 6, which is 8, and then you have to find 1/3 of a number thatgives you eight and that is 24. I checked it by starting with 24 and then going through the process again started from the begginging.

I'm not sure what was Audrey's message is, but I think she is having problem with submitting her new response to me. So, I told her to use explore. My first message is cut off. I submitted again. And so far, Audrey is the only student who submitted a response. So, should I just response to her what she had first response or should I wait for her second response?

We will be reading all responses tomorrow (Tuesday, 11/19) in class. I just checked and it appears that the system is taking answers just fine now. So, ask her exactly what problem she was experiencing. Also, ask her what browser she was using. The correct browser is "Microsoft Explorer" not "explore".

Mentor Reply: Hi Audrey,
Your answer for problem one is correct. Thank you for submitting a good explanation.
For the challenge problem: Your answer is not quite right. But you are on the right track. I am glad that you know this problem is working backwards. You did the first step correctly. But for the second step and the rest of the step I am not sure how you got it. Remember that you need to figure out what is the remainder of 3/4? That is the number you will use to figure out the next step. I hope this will help you. I am looking forward to reading your revisions.
Sincerely,
Nhia
