Answer(or question to Mentor): Lidsnay,
I never got to answer the challenge problems of last week, so here they are:
Part one answer is: 1047 and 1 fifth of a foot. I got this by knowing that sound travels one mile in five seconds. There are 5236 ft. in a mile so divide that by five and get 1047 and 1 fifth of a foot. That is one fifth of a mile so that is how far sound travels in a second.
Part two answer:
A) 6,000
B) 360,000
C) 8,640,000
D) 60,480,000
E) ( I chose to use four weeks every month) 241,840,000
F) 2,902,080,000
To get these answers I simply multiplied five by 60, because there are 60 seconds per minute. When I got this answer, for the hours, I multilied 60 times 6,000, because there are 60 minutes in an hour. This is how I did the rest of the problems too.

Answer(or question to Mentor): First I had to find out the entire length of the stick: 2/3 -= 5 ft so find 1/3 = 5 / 2 = 2.5 ft + 5 ft = Total height of stick as 7.5 feet or 90 inches.
a) 3/4 of stick for 2002 storm surge = 90 inches X 3/4 = 270/4 = 67.5 inches = 5 feet 7 1/2 inches.
b) 2002 dry stick is calculated as: 90 inches - 67.5 inches = 22.5 inches or 1 ft 10 1/2 inches.

Your answer was correct. Maybe you could explain to me a little further why you multiplied 90 inches by 3/4 and why you subtracted 67.5 inches from 90 inches.
Also, try the challenge problem if you get a chance :)
Look forward to hearing from you, Lindsay

Instructor Comments: Lindsay,
I think this is an excellent answer, and I am not sure that further explanation of why he multiplied and subtracted is necessary. I would also say "I encourage you to try the challenge problem". Finally, I think it would be more grammatically correct to say "I look forward to hearing from you."

Answer(or question to Mentor): Lindsay,
The answer I got to the challenge problem was yes the house was washed away. Since Bob the homeowner, constructed his stilts so that forty percent of the pole was sticking in the ground, that would leave 60 inches sticking out of the ground. I know from the last problem that the stilt is 7.5 feet long. To find out how many inches long 40% of the pole is, you x .4 times 7.5, to get 30 inches. 7.5 ft. is equal to 90 inches. ( To get that I multiplied 12 x 7.5) 90 inches - 30 inches is = to 60 inches. 60 inches is equal to five feet. That meant that 7 and a half of the house was covered in water( I knew that because of last weeks answer to the problem, part A.)

Answer(or question to Mentor): Lidnsay,
The answer to Part A :
33/200
Part B:
63/165
I figured these answers by determining total calories. Since there were 14g of fat x 9 (# of calories per gram) for the fat. Same calulation for carbohydrates and protein using their grams and calories per gram. The sum is 330. 330/2,000 can be simplified to 33/200. For part B, I know that there were 126 calories from fat. 126/330 can be simplified to 63/165.

There is just one thing incorrect in your answer. Re-check your simplification of the fraction 126/330. Everything else is correct, looking forward to your revision and you should try the challenge problem.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Lindsay,
The answer to the challenge problem is 36 nuggets total. If Miles ate 1/2 of what was left after Juan, and Lani ate the 3 left, that three is one half, so 3+3=6. If Juan ate 3/4 of what was left, than Miles ate the one fourth of what was left or 3. If 3 is 1/4, than 4/4 would be 12. Ralph ate 1/3, so the 2/3 left is what Juan ate. If two thirds =12, than 1/3 is 6. 12 +6 is = to 18. So.....
6+12+18= 36 nuggets total

Good response. However, as you can see, she has submitted a solution to the challenge problem, so change that part. Also, I would encourage her to express her answers as percents (and maybe explain what that means) since she has already finished these problems. You may even want to challenge her with a more difficult challenge problem next time around.--Dr. Bowers

Everything else is correct and you got the challenge problem correct, looking forward to your revision. Since, you got everything correct - you should try to put the numbers into percents, do you know how to do that or do you need further explaining because I can help you. Let me know.
Lindsay :)
