Answer(or question to Mentor): Your answer for the challenge problem was so right I really liked it well the answer to the challenge problem was 330 percent. I multiplied the fat, carbondehydrates, and protien with their amount of calories. The other answer was 126 percent. I multiplied the 14 fat grams to the 9 calories. The other problem was 7 1/2 nuggets I divided 9/4to 1/2 where I got 4 1/2then i adeded 3 and got 7 1/2.

Mentor Reply: Elizabeth, You have a very good start to this problem. Start by getting the total amount of calories in the burger (330). Put that number over 2000 (RDA) to get a fraction. After you have a fraction, then find the percent by dividing the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom). For part 2, use grams of fat compared to total amount of grams in the burger. Then make a fraction. For the challenge, try picturing the problem or drawing it out. Work backwards. Explain to me where your numbers came from. This is a tough one to write! It is great that you two have a good working relationship! I think you need to be more direct. Start with something like, 'Elizabeth, You have a very good start to this problem, but your answer of 330 PERCENT is incorrect.' Actually, 330 refers to the number of calories in the cheeseburger, but the question asks for you to figure out what fraction (or percent) this is compared to the RDA of 2000 calories.' I think this would tell her that her answer is incorrect, and WHY, but it doesn’t' just tell her how to do it (as you do). The hint for #2 is OK. When you ask her to explain where her numbers come from, also explain that this will help you understand her thinking.--Dr. Bowers
