Answer(or question to Mentor): I think that the answer is that the storm surge was fifteen feet high, and five feet was left dry. I know that the storm surged 3/4 of the stilt, and I know that the stilt is twenty feet high so I multiplied 3/4 by five because four times five is twenty it equals 15/20 feet tall, and there was a remainder of 5/20 so that was the percentage left over that was dry. The story said that Andy checked to see the damage and it was 1/4 of the twenty feet dry which multiplied by five is equal to 5/20 feet dry.

Thank you for submitting a response this week. Your
answer of 15 feet of surge to the first question is
incorrect. Could you please explain to me how you
figured out how each stilt is 20 feet? Also, I know
that 4 times 5 equals 20, but how and why did this
influence you to multiply セ and 5? In your explanation
what exactly do you mean by 15/20 feet tall? For your
second answer of 5 feet, you are also incorrect, but
that is a result of coming up with the incorrect
answer for the first question. If you look closely,
you値l probably notice that there is no reference to
the stilt being 20 feet. Please try again. You値l get
it. I look forward to your next response.

Dr.Bowers, I forgot the

This is truly a pleasure to read. You are doing such a great job, and I really appreciate the hard work you are doing to really read the student's answer and address that student's particular way of thinking. This is one of the most important components of being a good teacher! A great job, and it makes my job a lot easier! Would you be willing to help others in our class who are having some difficulty writing responses?

Answer(or question to Mentor): I think the correct answer is that the storm serged 9 of 12 feet, and that 4 of 12 feet was left dry. If andy noticed that 3/4 of the pole was left dry and 1/4 of the pole was stuck in the ground. I multiplied 3/4 by 3 to equal 9/12 and I multiplied 1/4 by 3 to equal 3/12. So I then know that 3/12 of the pole was stuck underground and that leaves 9/12 of the pole still left. Let's say that the 12 is twelve feet tall and the the 9 was nine feet tall so that it was nine feet left out of the ground. Then subtract five feet which we know was left dry. That equals four feet left dry.

Mentor Reply: Marshall,
I truly admire your effort in solving this week痴
problem; however, your answer of 9/12 being submerged
and 4 feet left dry is incorrect. To answer this
problem, first you must figure out the length of each
stilt. Using the information given in the problem, you
will find that each stilt is 10 feet. Having 1/4 in the
ground means that 3/4 sticks out of the ground. If the
portion of the stilt sticking out is made up of three
parts, 1/3 of which is submerged in water and 5 feet
left dry, then 2/3 of the stilt sticking out of the
ground must equal 5 feet, so 1/3 = 2.5 feet. So, all
three parts sticking out of the ground = 7.5
(3x2.5=7.5). Now if 3/4 of the total pole is equal to
7.5, then the total length of the pole must be 10 feet
(7.5 is 3/4 of 10). To answer question a, if 7.5 feet
of the pole is above the ground, and 3/4 of the 7.5
feet was submerged in 2002, then 5.625 or 5 5/8 feet of
the stilt sticking out of the ground was submerged
(3/4 of 7.5 is 5.625). From this point, to answer
question b, you simply minus 5 5/8 from 7.5 to find
that 1 7/8 of the stilt was left dry. Do not be
discouraged. You are a very bright student and it shows
in your responses. I look forward to your next response.

Answer(or question to Mentor): I think the answer to this new problem is 330g of calories , and 14g of fat. I know that for every gram of fat there is 9 calories, and for every gram of carbohydrates the is 4 calories, also for 1 gram of protein there is 4 calories. There were 14 g of fat, 36g of carbohydrates, and 15g of protein. So I then figured that 14g of fat is equal to 126g of calories, and 36g of carbohydrates is equal to 144g of calories, also that 15g of protein is equal to 60g of calories. So I then added them all up to equal 330g of calories. I then put that over 2000g of calories which is your recomended daily allowance. Then the second question is the cheeseburger fat it was 126g over 2000g of calories which will reduce to 14g of calories over 65g of alories

Thanks for submitting answer. Your answer to the first
question of 330g over 2000g is correct and your
explanation is very clear. Good job!
For the second question, I believe it is asking you
what is the fraction of fat calories in the total
cheeseburger calories, not the RDA. If you think about,
you値l get it. After answering question 2 again, try to
answer the challenge problem. I値l give you a hint.
Think about working the problem backwards, starting
with the 3 chicken McNuggets. I look forward to your
response.
