Answer(or question to Mentor): A. First I figured out by drawing a model that one fourth of the stilt was underground and 3 fourths were above. I figures out that each third of a stilt is 2 and a half feet. THis lead me to multiply the length of the stilt, 7 1/2, by 3/4 and I got 5 5/8. This means that it surged 5 5/8 feet high

Answer(or question to Mentor): B. 1 7/8 of the stilt was dry. Using what I learned in part A., 7 1/2 feet per stilt, and it surges 5 5/8 feet. So I subtracted 7 1/2 feet and 5 5/8 feet and got 1 7/8 feet. This means that 1 7/8 of the stilt was dry.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge: No, it doesn't sweep away his house. First I figured out that his stilts were 10 feet long. I found that four feet are on the bottom and six are above. He made it, because 5 5/8 is less than 6. He made it, barley.

Your answers are correct. You gave me nice explanations of how you did the problem and why you decided on the process you did.
Great job, Dawn

Instructor Comments: Dawn,
Yes, her answers are correct and she obviously knows exactly what she is doing. Therefore, I think that you could push her to explain a bit more. For example, she states, "I figures out that each third of a stilt is 2 and a half feet." You could push her to explain more specifically how she figured that out.

Your answers are correct. You gave me nice explanations of how you did the problem and why you decided on the process you did. I just want to know specifically how you came up with each 1/3 = 2.5 feet.
Great job, Dawn

Answer(or question to Mentor): Number 1 is 330 caleries. I found this by using the information and multiplying 14 by 9 36 by 4 and 15 by 4. When I added these answers all togetherI got 330 caleries.

Number 2 is 30/200. I found this by using what I found in number 1 (330 caleries) and but it over 2,000. Next I simplified it getting 30/200.
I do not get number three can you tell me how to solve it.

Mentor Reply: Hi Amanda,
On number 1, your answer is correct, when it comes to knowing how many calories are in a cheeseburger. Your number 2 is still the answer to number 1. I wanted to know the fraction (or percentage)of her daily intake she ate. You have the right idea of finding out the answer. What if you don't simplify it and leave it 33/200. Can you also please tell me the answers to 14 x 9, 36 x 4, and 15 x 4.
For number 2, you have to take the number of calories are in the fat that was in the cheeseburger and how many calories are in the whole burger and make them into a fraction, like number 1.
Just for your knowledge, to make it into a percentage you divide 33 by 200, at first the answer will be a decimal, but move the decimal over two spaces to the right and put a percentage sign on it. You will then know the percentage of calories to her daily intake of calories.
For the callenge problem I would like you to go backwards. I know this sounds really funny, but I want you to start from the bottom of the problem with 3 (the nuggets that are left for Lani). From there, the information given is 1/2 of what was left over after Miles ate, so to know how many nuggets were in the buckets before miles ate must have been double of what Lani received. Now to figure out the answer maybe use a drawing or try to figure out how I might do the next part of the question.
If you need any help with any of the information I gave you or need more help with the challenge problem, just ask.
Thanks, Dawn

Answer(or question to Mentor): Dawn,
14x9=126 36x4=144 15x4=60
I found out my problem! It is that when Ms. Estes printed out our problems, I solved those problems, but now the questions have completely changed. Here are my new answers………. Number one is 33/200, I found this out by using the information that I first sent you, but now I made it into a fraction, Number 2 is 7/165(reduced) or 14/330, I used also what I found in number 1 (330 calories) and used he research to find that there are 14 grams of fat in it. Then I put 14/330, because 330 is how many total calories, there are in the cheeseburger. Then, I simplified to 7/160. In the challenge problem, I get everything up to the Ralph passed to Juan and he ate ¾ of it. Can you help?

Your response to this person is just fine. However, it appears that Amanda has revised her answer, and so some of your comments may not apply any longer. However, your general outline looks just fine, so respond directly to her newest submissions.--Dr. Bowers
