Answer(or question to Mentor): I know its six miles but I don’t know what I would do with the extra two seconds? I got six miles because I know every five seconds is a mile and five seconds times six equals 30. And there are 32 seconds.

Mentor Reply: Dear Tara, You have a great start. Maybe thinking about how many miles lightening would travel in 1 second will help you to find out what to do with the extra 2 seconds. Also, can you explain why you multiplied 5 seconds by 6? After exploring these questions, you may be able to come up with the answer. Good luck. Corrie

Corrie,
I think Tara should be congratulated not only for having a good start, but also for asking a great question. Your hint is excellent, I hope it works, it will be neat to see if it does. As for your second question, I think that her explanation of why she multiplied is pretty clear, I am not sure, especially given her current math explanation, what other words she would use to describe her thinking.
Also, why not encourage her to try the challenge question?
