Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi, here is the answer I got:
1)6.4 miles away. I know this because it takes 5 seconds for thunder to travel 1 mile. So 30=6 miles with 2 left over. The 2 converts to 2/5, which is 4/10, which as a decimal is .4. So 6+.4=6.4. Meaning 6.4 is your answer.

Great Job! This is really good thinking. Your conversion of 2/5 to 4/10 and then 4/10 to 0.4 shows good number sense. The only thing you might want to do is define the number in your statement 30=6miles with 2 leftover. Why don’t you try the challenge problem? I am looking forward to reading your next response.

Instructor Comments: Celeste,
I agree, this is fantastic thinking, just the kind we were hoping to see. Isn't it neat to see that some kids can explain mathematics so nicely? I would like to see this answer posted in the exemplary answers section. To be honest, I don't think that she even needs to label the 30, it is pretty clear that she knows she ends up with miles.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Thanks. I'm working on doing the challenge problems, so here are some of my answers:
*Challenges*
1)1,056 feet per second. I got this answer by knowing that 1 mile is 5,280 feet. Then, since 1 mile takes 5 seconds, divide 5,280 feet by 5 seconds, you get 1,056. I got 1,056 as the answer.
2)
a.6,000 times per minute. I got this by knowing that lightning strikes 100 times per second. Since there are 60 seconds in a minute, you multiply 60 by 10o. Your answer is 6,000.
b.360,000 per hour. I got this answer because lightning strikes 6,000 times per minute. There are 60 minutes in an hour. 60 multiplied bye 6,000 is 360,000. The answer is 360,000.
c.8,640,000 times per day. I got this answer because I know that lightning strikes 360,000 times per hour, and there are 24 hours in a day. You multiply 360,000 bye 24 and get 8,640,000. The answer is 8,640,000.
I am working on the others and will have them done soon.

Your calcuations are excellent! Good job in knowing that 1 mile is equal to 5,280 feet. I am looking foward to reading the rest of your answers to this problem. Keep up the good work! =)
