Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer is 6.4 miles away. I got this answer by dividing 5 into 32 and got 6.2. I did this because 5 seconds is one mile and it took 32 seconds for the thunder to go off. So five can go into 30 six times, with two seconds remaining left over. So, there was three more seconds away from seven miles. So that equals 2/5 because there was 2 extra seconds. 2/5 equals .4. So, the whole answer is 6.4.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer for the first challenge problem is 6,758.4 feet per second. I got this answer by multiplying 5,280 times 6.4. I did this because there is 5,280 feet in a mile, and 6.4 was the answer for the first question and it was how many miles sound travels per second. Then you have to divide what you got for multiplying 5,280 times 6.4, by five.
You do this because you have to find how many feet sound travels per second. Not per five seconds. So, you get 6,758.4 feet per second.

You did a great job solving this problem. Your answer is correct and your conceptual explanation is very good. Can you tell me why, after you give the correct answer to question you say you got 6.2 after dividing 32 by 5?
Thank you for attempting the challenge problem. Although your answer is incorrect, you are on the right track. There are 5,280 feet in a mile. I also see that you divided by 5 because you needed how many feet per second and it took 5 seconds to go 1 mile. I am unclear on why you multiplied by 6.4. Can you explain this to me? Thanks.

Answer(or question to Mentor): I got 6.2 after dividing 32 by 5 because 5 will go into 32 six times with a remainder of two. When you have a remainder you are supposed to make it a decimal so it made it 6.2.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer for the first challenge problem is 1056 feet per second. I got this by dividing 5,280 by five. I did 5,280 because thats how many feet are in a mile and i divided by five because it takes 5 seconds to go one mile for lightning. So then i got 1,056 feet per second.
