Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer is 27 miles. It is because well if 32 seconds is the total and 5 seconds for the sound to travel 1 mile then you take 32 and 5 and minus it. That equals 27 so that is the answer.

Mentor Reply: Hi Brianna, I'm sorry about replying late and I will respond sooner. You did a good job explaining how you solved the problem, but can you tell me why you subtracted 32 seconds from 5 miles? Try to put units after all quantities and remember that two numbers that are subtracted from each other have to be in the same units. Thanks for answering, but look over your answer again. I look forward to reading your revision. -April

Answer(or question to Mentor): Sorry April, and its ok we are hving troubles too. Well I subtracted 32 minus 5 because it was in the problem. Oh I accidently put miles after 5. Well I did that because if it takes 5 seconds to travel 1 mile than you take the total of the number that you had and subtract it from what it takes for 1 mile. That is how I got 27. Well I hope I get to talk to you later!

Mentor Reply: Hi Brianna, how are you today? Thanks for explaining why you subtracted 32 seconds and 5 miles, but two numbers cannot be subtracted from each other if they are not the same units. Think of it this way, if the lightning was 27 miles away, which is your answer, then you would multiply 27 miles times 5 seconds to find out how many seconds away the lighning is. If the lightning is 27 miles away then it would also be 135 seconds away, but the problem says that it is only 32 seconds away. So we know that it has to be less than 27 miles away. Let me know what you think and I look forward to reading your response soon.
