Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi,
The answer to my problem was 6 2/3 miles .I went 5x6=30 and I knew every 5 sec was 1 mile so that would be 6 miles then I divided 2 by 5 and altogether I got 6 2/3.

Hi! My name is Angela and I will be your mentor. Great start! Your answer is very close. Could you explain why you divided 2 by 5? When you divide 2 by 5, what answer do you get? Also, please explain why you multiplied 5 and 6 together. I look forward to seeing your explanation.

Instructor Comments: Angela,
Ignore the student's plea to write again, the teacher misunderstood the system and showed the students the mentor comments (using the admin code) before you'all sent them. Anyway, this response is good, although I would be even more direct: you can say the answer is close, but not quite correct. Since the difficulty lies in the division, I would start by asking the student to recheck the division. Then, I would also encourage her to revise her explanation as well. You could say something like "Suppose that you wanted to explain your thinking to a friend in your class who was confused. Can you find a way to explain why multiplication of 5*6 makes sense?"

Hi! Congratulations on getting the correct answer of 6.4 miles. I see that you do not remember how you got the answer. The method I use to help me remember how I solve a problem is to write down what I do as I am solving it. That way I don't forget anything. Also, if I make a mistake I can see where I did it.
One way you could explain to a friend why you divided is because you wanted to see how many sets of 5 were in 32.
Now that you have an idea of how to explain your solution, I look forward to seeing your explanation for the next problem. Good luck!
