Student's Name: Robbie
Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer is 6.4 miles because 30 divided by 5 is 6 and the left over would be 2/5 which is 0.4

Date: Mon Oct 14 06:27:10 PDT 2002
Student's Name: Robbie
Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer to challenge one is 1,056 because there is 5,280 feet in a mile divided by 5 because it takes thunder 5 seconds to go a mile. The answers to challenge two are:a.6,000 because 100 lightning strikes per second times 60 seconds in a minute.

Mentor Reply: Hello Robbie!

It is great that you got the right solution, and I'm so impressed with your way of solving division. However, can you explain to me why you divided 32 by 5, Robbie?

And for your first challenge problem, I like the way you explained your way of solving it. In particular, I like how you tell me why you use 5,280 and why you divided 5,280 by 5. Very good!

For part a of your second challenge problem, you've got it right again, Robbie. And again your way of explaining it is easy to understand. So why don't you challenge yourself with the rest of the second challenge problem. I really looking forward to see your solutions.

Instructor Comments: Cam,
Your opening line is a bit difficult to read. You say, "It is great that you got the right solution, and I'm so impressed with your way of solving division." It does not make sense to solve division, so I think you need to revise it by saying "Congratulations! Your solution is correct. However, your explanation does not include a description of why you chose to divide. Please revise your explanation so that a student who is confused about the problem might be able to understand it."
Your use of the word "impressed" might not be approrpiate here: since you don't know the students, you don't know if this was easy or hard.
Again with the challenge problems: I think you need to be more direct. Say that his answers are all correct and that his explanations are clear and concise (which they are).

Congratulations! Your answer to the original problem is correct. However, you did not explain why you divided 32 by 5. Can you revise your explanation so that a student who missed the class that day would understand how to solve the problem?
For your first challenge problem, your answer is correct. I like your explanation. In particular, I like how you tell me why you used 5,280 and why you divided 5,280 by 5. Very good!
For your second challenge problem, your answers for part a, b, and d are correct. Your explanations are clear and concise. For part c, I think you've made a typographical error. Because based on part d, you have used the answer from part c and it is correct. Therefore, I figured that you have made a mistake when you typed in your answer. Other than that, you have done a great job in solving these problems. Since you're doing so well, you should challenge yourself with the rest of the second challenge problem.
Bye, Robbie

I was really impressed to see that all of your answers to the challenge problem are correct! In particular, you do a great job of explaining why you used 5,280 and why you divided 5,280 by 5. Very good!
Since you're doing so well, please try to figure out the last challenge, how many times lightening strikes in a year. I look forward to reading your revised explanation to the original problem and your answer to the last challenge question.
