Mentor Reply: Austin: Well done on getting the correct answer! One thing I would encourage you to do is to show your work. Although this problem may have been easy for you, it will help you with more difficult problems if you show what calculations you have made and how you made them. For example, why did you divide 5 into 32? Explaining yourself also helps someone who may not understand the problem as easily as you do. Try taking a shot at the challenge problems. If you need any help feel free to write me.

YOu have done a really nice job of explaining why we hope the students will explain their answers. What I have found in reading over these student responses is that we have to be really direct in our requests. So, if you say "I would encourage you to do..." might sound to the student as though nothing actually needs to be done. Therefore, I woudl change it to say something like, "Your solution to the problem is correct. However, your explanation needs to be revised to indicate how you solved the problem. [then go on with your explanation about how it will help...]. I would actually not speculate about whether the problem was easy or hard for him. For example, he might have had no idea and a friend just told him to divide.
Good idea to encourage him to do the challenge problem, but again, make sure you make it clear that he must first revise his explanation.
