Answer(or question to Mentor): Problem Solution: The lightning is 6.4 miles away. Rationale: If the lightning is one mile away for every 5 sec. then in 30 sec. it would be 6 miles away. 5 goes into 30, 6 times. So, we know it is 6 point something miles away. Then 5 goes into 32, 6.4 times. (6 2/5) There for it is 6.4 miles away!!

Mentor Reply: Hello Lindsey. My name is Petra and I am your mentor. You did a great job answering the Problem of the Week. Your answer of 6.4 miles is correct and I can see how you solved the problem. Could you tell me why you divided? What is your reasoning? After you think about why you divided, I think you should try the Challenge Problem. Great job Lindsey. I can’t wait to hear back from you.

Instructor Comments: Petra,
I think Lindsey does a nice job of explaining, and I am not too sure that there is much more to say. I could be wrong, you can make the call on this one, but ask yourself what else exactly you expect. If it is clear to you, then mauybe give her a hint!
Good to ask her to do the challenge problem.

My name is Petra and I am your mentor. The reason that you could not see my messages before is because I submit them to my teacher first for review. After my teacher reads what I wrote to you and approves of it, I send it directly to you. Sorry for any confusion. :)

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge answer part 1: 1056 ft. Rationale: To figure out the answer first you have to convert miles in to feet. If lightning travels one mile every 5 seconds then it travels 5280 ft. every five seconds. There are 5280 feet in a mile. Now, to see how far lightning travels in one second you have to divide 5,280 by five because ,again, we know it travels 5280 feet in 5 seconds. 5,280 divided by 5 equals 1056 ft.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Answer to Challenge question partII: A. 6,000 Times per minute B. 360,000 times per hour C. 8,640,000 times per day D. 60,480,000 times per week E. 241,920,000 times per month F. 3,153,600,000 times per year Rationale: I got 6,000 by knowing there are 60 seconds in a minute and multiplying it times 100 strikes of lightning. I got 360,000 by multiplying 6,000 times 60 because there are 60 minutes in an hour. I got 8,640,000 by multiplying 360,000 times 24 because there are 24 hours in a day. I got 60,480,000 by multiplying 8,640,000 times 7 because there are 7 days in a week. I got 241,920,000 by multipying 60,480,000 times 4 because there are four weeks in a month. I got 3,153,600,000 by multiplying 241,920,000 times 12 because there are 12 months in a year.

Mentor Reply: Hello Lindsey.

It is so good to see that you tried the challenge problem. In part #1, you are so close to being right. There is only one problem with your answer. The units need to be feet per second, not just feet. I know it seems like a little thing, but there is a big difference. The unit feet is a measurement of distance while the unit feet per second is a measurement of speed or the rate. Your calculations are right on and I understand your rationale. I know you probably meant feet per second, you just need to be sure to write it.

All of your answers for part #2 are correct. I was confused by you rationale for part f though. You said that you multiplied 241,920,000 by 12 and got 3,153,600,000. 241,920,000 x 12 = 2,903,040,000. But 8,640,000(number of strikes per day) x 365 (number of days in a year) = 3,153,600,000. I think this must have been the calculation you performed. Both are correct if you can explain your process in your rationale.

Please understand that I understand your answers. I am just trying to help you refine your skills. We are going to be posting outstanding explanations. I want yours to be one of them. You do an excellent job explaining your answers. I am pointing out these small things to help you make them better. Overall, you are doing a great job. I can’t wait to work with you on the next problem.
