Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi my name is Alex nice to meet you I am sure that we will have fun over the next few weeks well here we go PROBLEM SOLUTION: 6.4 miles away RATIONALE: I divided 32 seconds by five to come up with the solution of 6.4 miles away. I did this because if 5 seconds is one mile then to find out how many miles away 32 seconds is you need to divide by how many seconds one mile is.

Mentor Reply: Hi Alex, my name is Oscar, nice to meet you too. Your answer is correct. 6.4 miles is indeed the right answer. However, the second sentence of your rationale is not clear. For example, can you explain to me what do you mean by "5 seconds is a mile?" I hope to hear from you soon. Oscar

Instructor Comments: Oscar,
Your response is fantastic. However, in reading over a lot of these, it seems that saying "5 seconds is a mile" is characteristic of what they say. I am debating now whether we need to be as specific as that. I think the goal should be to push the kids about the math, and I think that Alex does a pretty good job of explaining why he divided. So, let's let his explanation stand as is. Instead, why don't you just encourage him to submit answers for the challenge questions?

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge: 1. 1056.125 feet per second Rationale: 1. I got this answer from multiplying the number of feet in a mile, 5280, by my answer ,6.4. I got an answer of 33796 i then divided that by 32, the number of seconds, and came up with the answer 1056.125. Challenge: 2. per minute 6000 feet, per hour 360,000 feet, per day 8,640,000 feet, per week 60,480,000 feet, per month 1,814,400,000 feet, per year 662,136,000,000. Rationale: 2. I got these answers by multiplying 100 by 60 then using that answer and multiplying it by 60 then that answer by 24 then the next answer by 7 the next one by using a 30 day month the next answer by 365. hope you understand this

Mentor Reply: Hello Alex, good work. Your answers are correct up to weeks. However, the answers for strike per month and per year are not correct. In addition, you labeled all you answers as feet, but the question is asking for strikes. To find the answers for strikes per month, you take the result you got for strikes per day and multiply it by 30.
To get the result for strikes per year you take the result you got for strikes per day and multiply it by 365.
Thank you Alex. I will be looking forward to read you answers for next problem that we will post next week.
Take care meanwhile.
