Answer(or question to Mentor): PROBLEM SOLUTION: The thunder is 6.4 miles away.
RATIONALE: If it takes 5 seconds for the thunder to travel 1 mile, and it traveled for 32 seconds, I divided 32 by 5 and got 6.4 seconds; since, the thunder travels 1 mile in every 5 seconds, it traveled 6.4 miles.

Thank you for submitting a response
I understand your calculation of 32 divided by 5 = 6.4, but make sure you are sonsistent with your units. In the problem solution you said 6.4 miles and in the rationale you said 6.4 seconds. Can you send me a response with what you would say your final answer would be?
I have another question, why did you choose to use division rather than multiplication?
Thanks again and I hope to hear from you soon.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The reason I chose to divide instead of multiply, is because I wanted to first figure out how many sets of 5 seconds there were in 32 seconds. After I divided I found that there were 6.4 sets of 5 seconds in 32 seconds. Since, the sound travels 1 mile every 5 seconds and there are 6.4 sets of seconds in 32 seconds, I multiplied 6.4 seconds times 1 (1 = miles) and found that the thunder was 6.4 miles away.

Dr. Bowers, should I assume what that symbol stands for?? As in sets I mean? Or should I just straight go on responding? Thanks

Answer(or question to Mentor): CHALLENGE SOLUTION: 1. Sound travels 1,056 feet per second.
2. A. Lightning strikes the earth 6,000 times per minute.
B. Lightning strikes 360,000 times per hour.
C. Lighting strikes 8,640,000 times per day.
D. Lightning strikes 60,480,000 times per week.
E. Lightning strikes 241,920,000 times per month.
F. Lightning strikes 2,903,040,000 times per year.

Answer(or question to Mentor): RATIONALE: 1. Since there are 5280 feet in a mile, and it takes 5 seconds for sound to travel 1 mile I divided 5280 feet by 5 miles to see how many feet sound travels in 1 second. I found that sound travels at 1056 miles per second.
2. A. Since lightning strikes the earth 100 times per second, I multiplied 100 times 60 seconds, since there are 60 seconds in a minute and found that lightning strikes the earth 6000 times per minute.
3. Since lightning strikes 6000 times per minute, I multiplied 6000 times 60, since there are 60 minutes in a hour, and found that lightning strikes the earth 360,000 times per hour.
4. Since lightning strikes 360,000 times per hour, I multiplied 360,000 times 24, since there are 24 hours in a day, and found that lightning strikes the earth 8,640,000 times per day.

Answer(or question to Mentor): 5. Since lightning strikes 8,640,000 times per day, I multiplied 8,640,000 times 7, since there are 7 days in a week, and found that lightning strikes the earth 60,480,000 times per week.
6.Since lightning strikes 60,840,000 times per week, I multiplied 60,840,000 times 4, since there are 4 weeks in a month, and found that lightning strikes 241,920,000 times per month.
7.Since lightning strikes 241,920,000 times per month, I multiplied 241,920,000 times 12, since there are months in a year and found that lightning strikes the earth 2,903,040,000 times per year.
Sorry I couldn't send it all at 1 time so I sent it in peices. Mattie
