Answer(or question to Mentor): Problem Solution: The lightening was 6.4 miles away.
Rationale: Since it takes 5 sec. for the sound of thunder to travel a
mile and the lightening has a 32 sec. time period between the lightening
and thunder, you divide 5 into 32.
Challenge Solution:
1. Sound travels in 156ft. per sec.
2. a) It would strike 6,000 times.
b) It would strike 360,000
c) It would strike 8,640,000 times
d) It would strike 60,480,000times
e) It would strike 259,200,000 times
f) It would strike 3,110,400,000 times
Challenge Rationale:
1. Since it takes 5 seconds for thunder to travel a mile and 1 mile has 5,280 ft, you divide 5,280 by 5.
2.Lightning strikes bout 100 times every sec. You multiply 100 times 60 since there is 60 sec. In a min. Then since there is 60 min. in an hour you mutiply that by 60 again. There is 24 hrs. in a day so you multiply 360,000 by 24. There is 7 days in a week so you multiply that number by 7. There is about 30 days in a month so you multiply that by 30. There is 12 months in a year so you multiply that by 12.

Mentor Reply: Hello Audrey,
Nice to meet you. You did a great job on your explanation on how you got your answer. When I first try to solve this problem, I have the same idea as you. Division does help to make math problem solving easier. 6.4 miles away is the correct answer. For the challenge problem: You also did a nice job. You almost got all the right answers, except for number 1, 2e, and 2f. You understand the problem and you are in the right track. But, I would like you to go back to check on 1, 2e and 2f. Hint: remember, you go from week to month not week to day.Nhia

Instructor Comments: Nhia,
To answer your question, Yes, you do have to type the '
' convention in order to go down to the next line.
Your response is good, but I do have two general comments. First, I would not really say that Audrey's explanation was "great." She didn't explain why she used division, she just said that she did use it. Since she is obviously smart, why not try to push her by saying something like, "Your answer is correct, but suppose that you wanted to explain your thinking to a friend in your class who was confused. Can you find a way to explain why division makes sense?"
My second comment relates to the grammatical errors in your response. Two relate to tenses. First, you say, "When I first try to solve this... I have the same ideas as you." This should be in the past, so you want to write, "When I first TRIED to solve this... I HAD the same ideas as you." Also, it is customary to say "you are ON the right track."
Why don't you end with something encouraging like, "I look forward to reading your revisions. Nhia"
I would be happy to read your revision before you send it out, or ask someone else to give their opinion.

Nice to meet you. Your answer is correct. I could see that you used division, but you did explain why you used it? Suppose that your partner did not understand and you wanted to explain your thinking to your partner. Can you find a way to explain why division makes sense?
For the challenge problem: You also did a nice job. You almost got all the right answers, except for number 1, 2e, and 2f. You seem to understand the problem and you are in the right track. But, I would like you to go back to check on 1, 2e and 2f. Hint: remember, you go from week to month not week to day. I looking forward to read your revisions.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Nhia,
Thanks, it was nice to hear from you....hear are my corrections:
You would use division to solve the problem because you would divide the number of sec. it takes for the sound of thunder to travel a mile into the number of sec. there is between the lightning and sound of thunder. You are trying to find the amount of time between the lightning strike and thunder.
~For the challenge problem questions that I missed, on 2e, since there is only an approximate amount of weeks in a month, using my calculator I got there are 4. 285714286 weeks in a month, which is the closest answer I can get, should I use that? Or should I round down?, should I use 4, since there is about 4 weeks in a month?
-I will get back to you with the my answers for the challenge problem

Answer(or question to Mentor): I realize that my answer for months and year wasn’t very accurate since I only estimated, I understand that is why I missed those 2. I think I came up with more exact answers and the new answer for the 1st question:
Challenge Problem Corrections:
1.= (I divided wrong so I came up with a different answer but now it is correct I think) 1,056 ft. per sec.
2e= since we don’t know exactly how many days there are in a month, I found out approx, how many days are in a month and I got 30.417. So to get e I multiplied 30.417 by c which was 8,640,000 and got 262,802,880 strikes per month.
2f= since I came out the approx. amount of days in a month I multiplied 365 (# of days in a year) by c(8,640,000) and came out with 3153600000 for times per year.
I think these answers will be more exact than my other ones put if they are still wrong, I’m not sure how I woulf figure out a more exact way to figure it out, my first answers seem reasonable, but my second ones are better..........please write back and tell me if I’m on the right track :)

Mentor Reply: Hello Audrey,
I am glad to hear from you too. I think my explanation for you may be clear. If that was the case, I'm sorry. You had the first one right. Good job.
But for the challenge part: You got the correct answer for a-d. Here are the solutions for e and f. e) 241,920,000, F) 2,903,040,000. We multiplied the answer for d by 4 weeks to get e) 241,920,000 and multiplied e by 12 months to get f. In this case, we do not multiplied the average month by the answer for c, because all the months were different in days. I hope my explanation help you. Overall, I think you did a great job! I am looking forward to read your next solution.
