Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer is 6 and 1 quarter (approximately) away from where you are. I used division. I used this because in order to find the distance of the lightning you need to divide the amount of time (5 seconds) by the measure of how much time passes between the time of the thunder and lightning. (32 seconds) Because 5 will not go into 30 evenly so, when I divided it came out 6r2 so I rounded. When I rounded I came out with approximately 6 and 1 quarter miles away.

Answer(or question to Mentor): cp 1. I think the answer is 160 ft per second. I used multiplication because when you multiply it gives you an answer of area. In order to find the answer you need area which tells you distance. I multiplied 32 times 5 and got 160 ft. This is what I think but I really didn’t understand. So, will you help me with an explanation of the problem?

Mentor Reply: Savannah,
Your answer is not quite correct, but your idea is in the right place, good.
You now that it is 32 divided by 5 and came out with 6 remainder 2 that's right.
However, can you be more exact why you rounded?
Also, for your personal knowledge a quarter is .25 like 4 quarter equals a dollar.

The chanllenge is not asking for the area it is asking to change from miles to feets.

Tip: There is 5,280 feet for 1 mile. Also, there is one mile for every five second. Read the question carefully for what is asking you.

Try solving the problem again I hope I was helpful. Let me know your new thoughts.

Good Luck!

Instructor Comments: Luis,
Your ideas are excellent. However, this response has some grammatical and spelling errors that we need to correct.
(1) You say, "You now that it is 32 divided by 5 and ..." The verb is 'know', not 'now'. Please change. Also, doing division is ONE way to solve the problem, but not the only way. So, I would revise your statement to say something like, "Using division was a good way to think about this problem." Actually, her explanation isn't accurate because she said she had to divide 5 by 32, when in fact she divided 32 by 5. However, you don't have to call this to her attention as I think it was just a typo.
(2)You then say, "However, can you be more exact why you rounded?" This sentence needs to be re-written to correct the grammar, but I am not sure that asking her to be more exact in her explanation is what you really want. What you really want is for her to answer the question exactly instead of rounding. So, please rephrase that sentence. Also, I am not sure that you need to include the statement for her personal knowledge because it is not always safe to assume that students do or don't know something.
(3) You say, "The chanllenge is not asking for the area it is asking to change from miles to feets." First, there is a spelling error: the word is 'challenge'. Second, we say "feet", not "feets".
(4) I am not sure why you included the second part of your tip: it is clear that she already knows that there is one mile for every five seconds. So, please erase that part, and also the part about reading the question carefully--- I think she is doing that, but just having some difficulty with the mathematics.
(5) Put a period after "again" in your last sentence.
Given that this might be hard to read, can you please submit your revision to me before you send it to the student?

Your answer is not quite correct, but your idea is on the right place. You know that 32 divided by 5 equal to 6 and remainder 2. There is no need to round. There are many other ways to solve this problem beside division. Also, for your personal knowledge a quarter is .25 like 4 quarters equal a dollar.
The challenge is not asking for the area it is asking to change from miles to feet. I look forward to read your revisions and your challenge problem.

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer is 160 miles. I multiplied 32 by 5 because you’re answer should give you five sets of thirty-two seconds. I knew to do this because of that. So when you multiply those two numbers it gives you 160 which is your answer.
