Answer(or question to Mentor): It gave you how many seconds it would take to travel one mile, that is 5 seconds, and the bolt appeared 32 seconds before thunder was heard. So I divided 32 by 5 and came up with 6.2 miles away

Mentor Reply: Eric,
Your thoughts are in the right track nice. You know it is division and divided by the right numbers. But I need more details how you got 6.2 miles away especially the .2
Tip: To make the problem more understandable split 32 into 3 tens and 2 ones and divide each one by 5.

Your ideas are right on target. However, your English has a few grammatical errors.
(1) Please remove the "nice" at the end of the first sentence. I would also say something like, "Your thoughts are on track. Unfortunately, your answer is incorrect." We have learned that we have to be really direct with these students or they don't think they need to actually change their answers.
(2) The sentence "...I need more details how you got 6.2" is not grammatically correct because you need another verb such as "...I need more details EXPLAINING how you got 6.2" OR "...I need more details RELATING how you got 6.2". However, I think that what you are really saying is, "Your answer of 6 is correct, but please review what you need to do with a remainder of 2." Your tip then fits in well.
Finally, please encourage him to do the challenge problem, and don't include your last name in the response.
