Answer(or question to Mentor): I know that the storm is 6.2 miles away. I know this because, if it takes 5 seconds for sound to travel a mile, and it took 32 seconds that 5 will go into 30, 6 times so it is six miles. The extra seconds mean that the sound is 6 miles and two tenths of a mile away. P.S Hi Lindsay!!!

Answer(or question to Mentor): I just re-worked this problem. I realized that the answer isn’t 6.2 miles away. I found out that the storm is 6.4 or 6 2/5 miles away. I found out that I should use fifths instead of tenths to get the correct answer.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge Questions 1.I know that sound travels 1,056 feet per second. I know this because if there are 5,280 feet in a mile, and sound travels 1 mile in 5 seconds that if I divide 5 seconds into 5,280 feet, I will get the answer, 1,056. 2.A.100 strikes X 60 seconds = 6000 strikes per minute B. 6000 strikes per minute X 60 minutes = 360,000 strikes per hour C. 360,000 strikes per hour X 24 hours = 8,640,000 strikes per day D. 8,640,000 strikes per day X 7 days= 60,480,000 strikes per week E. 60,480,000 strikes per week x 4 weeks= 241,920,000 strikes per month F. 241,920,000 strikes per month x 12 months= 2,903,040,000 strikes per year

Mentor Reply: Hi Kacey, thanks for responding.
It was a nice surprise to see that you reworked the problem on your own and got the correct answer. Can you explain a little further how you corrected yourself and how you knew to use fifths instead of tenths?
Also, you got the challenge problem correct, keep up the good work.
Lindsay
(PS- DR BOWERS, AFTER CLASS I CAME TO SEND MY RESPONSE TO KACEY AND SHE HAD REDONE THE PROBLEM, IS MY RESPONSE OKAY TO HER ANSWER TO THE CHALLENGE PROBLEM?)

Lindsay,
Yes, your response is perfect. Your questions are right on target. (One might guess that she talked with another student-- but let's see how she explains it.) I would send it just as is (although I haven't done the challenge problems, so I don't know if those answers are correct).

Answer(or question to Mentor): To explain how I reworked the problem, I thought that since it takes 5 seconds for the sound to travel a mile I should use the fifths of the mile instead of tenths.
