Answer(or question to Mentor): Dear mentor
I think the answer is 3 miles and a half. You have to multiply three times ten would give you 30with two left over. You have to multiply because it says how far away is lighting if 32 seconds passes between the flash and the thunder and you will multiply and get 3 miles and ½.

Mentor Reply: Hi John, thank you for submitting your answer and attempting the problem. Could you explain why you multiplied three times ten and how you converted the remaining two seconds into ½. Please look over the problem again and resubmit your answer. Keep trying and I will be looking forward to reading your revision.

Instructor Comments:
Lillian,
I think your response is good, but I think you need to be more direct: You can start off with a nice positive statement as you have, but then tell him that his answer is incorrect. Your probing question about why he chose 3 and 10 is right on target. However, you need to end this question with a question mark, not a period.
Also, why don't you encourage him to try the challenge problems?

Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi Lillan I multiplyed because I didn't look over the whole question to see what I did wrong. Now I think you should divide and you should get six with two left over. I think you should do that because it says it takes five seconds for the sound of thunder to travel one mile. So if you divide five into tirtytwo you would get six with two left over. Sorry I still don't know what the two left over is. Bye
