Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer is that the lightning is 6.4 miles away. I know that because if it takes 5 seconds if it one mile away. Then 32 seconds past and one mile every five seconds, then five goes into 30, 6 times. Then the extra two told me to do 5 into 32 which is 6.4.

Answer(or question to Mentor): ON the challenge questions i can't figure it out because i don't know how much faster the speed of light is than the speed of sound.

Mentor Reply: Chandler,
Good job in getting the correct answer. Can you explain a little more on how the "extra two" told you to divide 5 into 32?
As for the challenge question, look for the speed of sound that is given in the lightning and thunder problem to help you out. I am looking forward to your next response.

Answer(or question to Mentor): I knew to divide five into thirty two because the “extra two” (meaning 32) told me I needed to dive 5 into 32.

Instructor Comments:
Kevin,
Let me explain what is going on here: apparently the students were really excited to see their mentors' responses and so when they logged on, they saw the tally box showing that you had responded, but got frustrated because they couldn't see the text. So, they asked their teacher if there was a problem, and she used the admin password to show the students what each mentor had written (to me). I guess she didn't realize that she was supposed to wait until I approved each one.
At any rate, I would have said that your initial comments were perfect. However, it appears that we were both wrong as he didn't really explain any better. so, how about being a bit more direct by saying something like, "I see how you divided 32 by 5, but when you do this you get a remainder of 2. What did you do with this remainder?"
Good job on the challenge hint.
Dr. Bowers
