Answer(or question to Mentor): 6 2/5 miles, It takes 32 seconds for thunder to travel 6 2/5 miles. The lightning is 6 2/5 miles away. You divide 32 into 5 would be 6 2/5. I guessed to divide because the question said that it wanted to know how far away it was.

Kelly,
Thanks for checking back on your student and finding that he did submit an answer.
Your response is OK, although I am not sure that I would consider his response a "great job." Why don't you try to push him a bit more by saying something like, "Your answer was correct, although I am not sure that a classmate who read your explanation would understand exactly why you chose to divide. You say that the 'question wanted to know how far away it was', can you explain how that relates to division?"

Thanks for submitting an answer. Your are correct, although I am not sure that one of your classmates would understand exactly why you chose to divide. You say that the question asked for how far away it was. Can you explain to me how this relates to division? Please try the challenge problems also. I will be looking forward to your responses:). -Kelly

Answer(or question to Mentor): Hi Kelly
Your welcome. The reson why I used divsion was that I also {besides my guessing} was that I used the process of elimination. It couldn't be adding or multipling and Subtraction wouldn't be enough, so I had to go with divsion.

Pretend like you are explaining your solution to a classmate that doesn't understand why division works in this problem. Can you describe the steps to figuring out that you needed to use division. Why didn't multiplication, subtraction or addition work? Also try the challenge problems. I think you will enjoy them.

Answer(or question to Mentor): I couldn't have used Mulipication beacuse that would have just taken me higher so would addition. Subtraction would not be enough so I used division, also when you look at the words "one mile", "five seconds", and 32 seconds you just sort of know.

Mentor Reply: Hi Kevin,
For the next problem I would like you to work on explaining your answer with more details. For example, in this problem you know to use division but I am not clear as to why.
You could explain this by saying that you need to find out how many sets of 5 seconds are in 32 seconds (32 divided by 5). This gives you 6 with a remainder of 2. The remainder 2 can be expressed as a fraction of 2/5 or as a decimal (.4). So the answer is 6 and 2/5 or 6.4 miles.
Giving more details in your answer will help when you explain a problem to a classmate, your teacher or your parents.
The next problem will be posted soon. I am looking forward to helping you again:)
