Answer(or question to Mentor): Hey Gretchen, Hey my name is Whitney Fischer. Light travels faster than sound so we always see the lighting bolt before we hear the accompanying thunder. When I see lighting, I start to count the seconds until I hear the thunder. It takes five seconds for the sounds of thunder to travel one mile. How far away is the lighting if thirty two seconds pass between the flash of the lightning bolt and the sound of the thunder? 12 seconds is what I got.Divide 5 and 60 and you get twelve. The first time you divide 5 and 32 then you get 60 and then you divide 5 and 60. you get the 5 because it takes 5 seconds for thunder to travel a mile.

Mentor Reply: Hi Whitney.
You have a good attempt at the problem. I found it interesting that you divided 5 by 60, could you tell me why you chose to do that? Also, can you tell me about why you divided the 5 into the 32? You have good ideas. Try on your revision to work only with the numbers that are given to you.

Instructor Comments: Gretchen,
I think this is a difficult case. Probably best to ignore the personal question. Your response is good, but I think you need to be a bit more direct here. You could say exactly what you said, but add on to it: "You have a good attempt at the problem, but your answer of 60 is incorrect." THen you could ask her to explain why she divided 60 by 5, etc. as you did.
