Answer(or question to Mentor): The lightning would be 6 2/5 miles away. I knew 5 seconds would divide into 30 seconds 6 times and there would be 2 seconds left over. I put it in a fraction of 6 2/5.

Answer(or question to Mentor): lightning strikes 6000 times a minute. I timesed 60x100 because a minute is 60 seconds and a second strikes 100 times in a seond.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Lightning travels 316,800 per feet. I timed 60x5280 because there is 60 mili seconds in a second and there is 5280feetin a mile so I got 316800.

Mentor Reply: Great job on your responses Elizabeth! Thank you for submitting them. Origional question: Good job on getting the correct answer of 6 2/5 miles away. Your math is correct but you need to clarify where you got your numbers from. Why did you have to have a fraction? Why did you divide 32 six times? What were you finding out? If you can answer these questions, your response would be more clear and I would see that you completely understand the problem. Great job again on getting the correct answer. Challenge 2a: Great job on figuring out the correct answer! Lightning does strike 6000 times a minute. You showed that you understand this problem. Your wording for your explanation could be a little more clear (seconds/lightning) but overall this is a great response. Challenge 1: Thanks for attempting the challenge problem #1. You have a really good start to this problem but your answer is incorrect. First, think about what you are looking for in your answer. We want to find how many feet are traveled per second. We know how many feet are in one mile(5280), and we know that it takes 5 seconds for sound to travel one mile. Try thinking about this problem a different way. Hint: mili seconds are not needed for this problem. In your next response, tell me step by step what you do and why you do it. Good attempt on this difficult problem. Keep trying. Thank you for submitting your responses. I look foreward to seeing your revised responses. Sincerely, Erik

Answer(or question to Mentor): Thanks for looking at my responses. On the origional problem I didn't really understand why I got the fraction but it was the first thing that poped in my head. Mabey you can help by explaining the question better. That would be awsome. THanks. Sincerely, Liz

Answer(or question to Mentor): In the original problem I divided 6 because lightning travels 5 seconds so 6x5 equals 30 and you have 2 left over so I put it in a fraction of 6 2/5.
