Answer(or question to Mentor): Hello Emily,
The answer to the question I believe is 6 2/5 miles. I was confused though because 32 is not able to be multiplied by 5 evenly. This made the problem a little more complicated. By multiplying 5x6, you would get 30. The number is 32, but I know so far there are 6 miles because if you take five seconds, 1 mile, and make it 30 you would multiply by 6. Then you add two to 30 and you will get 32. This would be 2/5 of a mile. This fraction can not be converted and it is not improper so the answer is 6 2/5 miles.

Great job Austin. Your answer of 6 2/5 miles is correct and your explanation is very well thought out. I like that I could follow your reasoning as you solved the problem. However, the fraction could be converted into a decimal, and the answer could be written in another way. Can you convert 6 2/5 into decimal form?
I’m glad to see that you are trying the challenge problem as well. In response to your question, there are 5,280 feet in one mile. I look forward to your response to the problem of the week, and your solution to the challenge problem. Keep up the good work!

Answer(or question to Mentor): Dear Emily,
thank you for the information. the answer to the first challenge problem is 1,056 feet per second. the way I answered the problem was in 5 seconds it trvaled a full distance. 5,280 feet. by dividing 5 into 5,280 feet, you will turn up with your answer. I divided 5 into 5,280 because that is how long it took to get that far and by dividing 5 into this number, you will get the answer by seconds. the answers to the second problem are:
1oo times per second
6,000 times per minute
21,600,000 times per hour
38,924,000,000 times per day
9,461,494,080,000,000 times per week
536,856,389,691,520,000,000 times per month
6,462,276,576,298,240,000,000 times per year
I know. That may be very hard to read unfortunately. the only problem is it would be very hard to explain. each time though, I multiplied each by a number of hours or minutes or seconds. Other wise it is very complicated.

Hi Austin, thanks for responding to the challenge problem. I’m glad to see you put in the effort to stretch your mind. Your answer to the first question, that sound travels 1,056 feet per second, is correct. I like how you explained, step by step, how you came up with this answer.
For the second part of the challenge, part a is correct (lightening strikes per minute), but b through f are incorrect. You knew to multiply 100 strikes per second by 60 to get 6,000 strikes per minute (because there are 60 seconds in one minute.) However, for part b, where you find how many strikes per hour, you should have multiplied your last answer: 6,000 strikes per minute, by 60 because there are 60 minutes in one hour. This would have given you the correct answer of 360,000 strikes per hour.
Then, for part c, you should multiply the answer to part b by 24 because there are 24 hours in one day. If you continue this process you can find all of the answers.
This problem was definitely challenging because it required you to keep track of what your previous answer was and to relate it to the next part of the question.
Keep up the great effort Austin. -Emily
