Answer(or question to Mentor): I think the answer to the problem is 6.2 miles and this is how I got the answer. I divided 32 by 5 and got 6 with a remainder of 2 so it is 6.2 and if 5 seconds equals 1 mile then the lightning is 6.2 miles apart from the thunder.

I like that you knew to divide 32 by 5 to get 6 with a remainder of 2. However, 6.2 is not the correct answer. Could you tell me what the remainder of 2 means in relation to the problem? I would also like you to explain why you divided 32 by 5. I look forward to reading your response.

Emily,
Good job in framing your question about the remainder. I wonder if he/she could be pushed to explain why he or she divided? You could say something like, "Suppose that you wanted to explain your thinking to a friend in your class who was confused. Can you find a way to explain why division makes sense?"
