Answer(or question to Mentor): I think the answer is 6.4 miles away. I think this because I know that every five seconds the storm is a mile away and they waited thirty-two seconds, so I divided five into thirty- two and got 6.4 miles.

I could figure this out if I knew how many feet were in a mile. Can you tell me this?

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge Two
A. It would strike 600 times per minute. If found this because every second it strikes 100 times and there are 60 seconds in a minute, so I multiplied 100 times 6 and got six hundred.
B. It would strike 36,000times per hour. I found this out by first multiplying 6 times 100 to figure out how many times it would strike per second, and got 600, next I multiplied 60 times 600 because I know that it strikes 600 times per minute and there are 60 minutes in an hour, so it is 36,000 times per hour.
C. It strikes 874,000 times per day. I used what I fouynd first in part A that it is 600 per miute and next in part B that is 36,000 per hour and I multiplied 36,000 times 24 because it strikes 36,000 times per hour and there are 24 hours in a day so, it is 874,000.

Mentor Reply: Hello Amanda,
You are right the answer is 6.4 miles away. I would like to know where the .4 came from. For the Challenge problem, I would like you to look up the information on how many feet are in a mile. You might look in your math book or maybe on the internet. For part two, can you please tell me why you multiplied 6 by 100 for a.
Thanks, Dawn.

Dawn,
I think that Amanda probably used a calculator, and so she was not experiencing the same confusion about the remainder that Trey was. Therefore, I am not sure if the question about .4 would make sense. However, I think she could be pressed to explain more clearly why she chose to divide.
You could compliment her for knowing what type of information is necessary for the challenge problem, and then encourage her to look up not only the number of feet in a mile, but also any other conversion numbers she might need for parts (a) through (f). Finally, maybe you could give her a general suggestion that she explain what each of her numbers represent in the challenge problems, for example, what the 100 and 6 stand for in part a.
From a format standpoint, can you insert a few breaks between paragraphs so that she can see a new idea?
Thanks, for your patience, at least this only happened to one mentor!

Answer(or question to Mentor): Which challenge problem is .4 in? I think that I should have multiplied 100 by 60 because there are 60 seconds in a minute, and it strikes 100 times. This means that all of my challenge two are wrong. I will fix them soon
Thanx,
Amanda

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challeng 2 a. . It would strike 6000 times per minute. If found this because every second it strikes 100 times and there are 60 seconds in a minute, so I multiplied 100 times 60 and got six thousand. B. It would strike 360,000 times per hour. I found this out by first multiplying 60 times 100 to figure out how many times it would strike per second, and got 6000, next I multiplied 600 times 600 because I know that it strikes 6000 times per minute and there are 60 minutes in an hour, so it is 360,000 times per hour. C. It strikes 8,740,000 times per day. I used what I fouynd first in part A that it is 6000 per miute and next in part B that is 360,000 per hour and I multiplied 360,000 times 24 because it strikes 360,000 times per hour and there are 24 hours in a day so, it is 8,740,000. I hope that you can understand this. These are the dixed challenge two problems. Amanda

Mentor Reply: Hi Amanda,
I am sorry I confused you with the .4. That comes from the answer in question one: 6.4
You were doing well with challenge problem #2 in the begining. Here are the answers to c through f, you might have had troubles understanding. The number of strikes in a day are 8,640,000, weeks are 60,480,000, months are, if you go by 4 weeks, 241,920,000, and years are 2,903,040,000.
The question about converting is a very good question. By the information you gave me is 5,280 feet equals a mile. Now we also now that the sound of thunder travels 1 mile or 5,280 feet in 5 seconds.
Thanks, Dawn.
