Answer(or question to Mentor):
My name is Trey, and what would you do with the 2 in 32 seconds because 5 don’t go in to it. I rounded down to 30.

Answer(or question to Mentor):
1. If sound travels 1 mile in 5 seconds I divided 5 into 5,280 because that is how many feet there are in a mile. The answer is 1,056.

Mentor Reply: Hello Trey,
Thank you for responding. I have read all of your responses and I came up with the conclusion that the second answer will keep you on track. You are correct, 5 does not go into 32 evenly, so you will have a remainder. Con you also tell me why you divided 5 into 30.
Thank you, Dawn

First, sorry about the message above. It appears there was some problem with your account and I could not see your submissions. I emailed the programmer who fixed it this morning (Monday). So, now we are on track.
I am reacting to your last submission: you first need to address Trey by name (I see you did that in the first one). Second, you need to be even more direct: I would say that you have read all of his responses and are impressed with his efforts. However, none of them are correct. Then you can say your sentence about the second one keeping him on track. That was nice. You say, "So you will have a remainder." Why not ask him to figure out what that remainder means in terms of miles. Also, you have a spelling error "Con you tell me..." but I like the idea of asking him why he divided. One way to be even more specific in that request is to say something like, "We will be posting the explanations that most clearly describe why division works here, so can you explain this as if you were telling a friend who was confused?"
Finally, why not encourage him to try to challenge problems too?

Mentor Reply: Hi Trey,
Since I am not sure you know the answer to the question here it is:
The answer is 6 2/5 miles. Since there are 5 seconds from lightening to thunder means that the storm is 1 mile away. So divide 5 into 32, getting 6 remainder of 2, which is 6 and 2/5. The 2/5 means that the storm is another 2/5 miles away.
I can't wait to here from you again with the new problem.
Thanks, Dawn
