The Original Problem

Charle has decided that she really needs to think about calories. Charle went to McDonalds and was going to order a regular cheeseburger for the special rate of 39¢ on Sunday. When she got there, she decided that she better figure out how many calories she was going to ingest.

Unfortunately, the label was ripped just where the calorie count was written. Luckily, she could still read the rest of the nutritional content: It stated the following:

14 g of fat
36 g of carbohydrates
15 g of protein

So, she did some research and learned the following:
1 gram of fat has 9 calories
1 gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories
1 gram of protein has 4 calories

Based on Charle’s research, answer the following:

  1. If the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calories is 2000 calories/day, what fraction (or percent) of her daily intake has she now ingested?
  2. What fraction (or percent) of the cheeseburger is fat?

Challenge:

Charle’s friend Lani was not worried about calories and so she decided to buy several packages of Chicken McNuggets to share with her friends (excluding Charle for obvious reasons!). When she got the bucket, she first passed it to Ralph, who ate 1/3 of the nuggets. Then, Ralph passed the bucket to Juan, who ate ¾ of what was left. Juan passed the bucket to Miles, who ate ½ of what was left. When Miles passed the bucket back to Lani, there were only 3 McNuggets left. How many did she purchase in the first place?

Exemplary answers for IMP 3

Student's Name: Hilary
Answer(or question to Mentor): 1) She has ingested 16.5 percent of her daily intake. To get the answer I added up the total number of calories in the cheeseburger (330) and divided that amount into 2000. Then I converted the result into a percentage. 2) 38.18 percent. 126 over 330 converted to a percentage. 3)

Answer(or question to Mentor): For the new problem, I know that (A) the burger is 33/200 of her daily calories and that (B) 21/55 is fat. I figured out the first problem by first multiplying. I multiplied the 14 grams of fat X the 9 calories in one gram of fat = 126 calories. Then 36 grams of carbohydrates X 4 calories in one gram of carbohydrates = 144. Then 15 grams of protein X 4 calories in one gram of protein =60. Then I added 126+144+60=330 calories. Since the RDA is 2000 calories I made the fraction, 330/2000. Then I simplified it to 33/200, which is the answer. For the next problem I made the fraction of 126 (calories of fat) and 330 (total calories) which is 126/330. Then I simplified this to 21/55, which is my answer.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Solution: 1)330 calories 2)16.5% 3)38.18% Chal:36 mcnuggets
Rational: 1) 14 grams of fat times 9 calories equals 126 calories. 36 carbs times 4 calories=144 calories. 15 protein grams times 4 calories = 60 If you add these together the cheeseburger has 330 calories.
2) 330 divided by 2000 = 16.5% of her daily intake
3) 126 calories divided by 330 calories = 38.18% fat

Answer (or question to Mentor): ~Maria~ 14g of fat 36g of carbs 15g of protein are in this cheeseburger ~and~ 1g of fat = 9 calories 1g of carbs= 4 calories 1g of protein= 4 calories a. To find how many calories are in the burger, I multiplied 14g of fat and 9 calories and got 126 calories. Then I multiplied 36g of carbs and 4 calories and got 144 calories. Then I multiplied 15g of protein and 4 calories and got 60 calories. I added all the products up and got 330 calories in the McDonalds cheeseburger. So 330/2000 can also be known as 165/1000, then 33/200, then 16.5%. So, the McDonalds cheeseburger takes up 16.5% of her daily calories. b .I added together the grams of fat, carbohydrates, and protein. I got 65. Then I put fourteen over 65. My answer is that 14/65 of the cheeseburger is fat.

Answer (or question to Mentor): Here is my Problem Solution:
1. 330 cal.
2. 16.5%
3. about 21 1/2%
Problem Rationale:
1. Since there are 14g of fat in her cheeseburger and 9 cal. in one g. of fat, you multiply those together. (which is 126) Then you multiply the number of carbs. in the cheeseburger times the number of cal. in 1 carb. (which is 4cal.)and you get 144 and then you multiply the 15g of protein in the cheeseburger by 4 since there is 4 cal. in 1 g. of protein and get 60. Then you add them all together and it is 330, so the number calories in the cheeseburger is 330.
2. To find the percentage of her daily intake, you would divide the 200 cal/day into the number of cal. in her cheeseburger to find out how many she takes in, and the answer is 16.5%
3. To find the percentage of the cheeseburger that is fat, you would add the 14g of fat, 36g of carb., and 15g of protein together which is 65, and divide 65 into 14 since that is the number of grams of fat in the cheeseburger, which is .215384616, that is rounded to about .215 or 21 1/2%

Answer(or question to Mentor): Problem Solution: 1.The burger has 16.5% of the recommended allowance. 2. 38.8% of the burger is fat. Problem Rationale: 1. Since 1g of fat=9 calories then you would multiply the number of grams of fat (14) by the number of calories per gram (9), which would equal 126 calories from fat. Since 1g of carbohydrates=4 calories then you would multiply the number of grams of carbohydrates (36) by the number of calories per gram (4), which would equal 144 calories from carbohydrates. Since 1g of protein=4 calories then you would multiply the number of grams of protein (15) by the number of calories per gram (4), which would equal 60 calories from protein. You then add the calories (126+144+60), which equals 330 calories. To find the percentage of recommended allowance of calories in a cheeseburger, you divide 330 by 2000. 2. To find the percentage of fat, I took the calories from fat (126) and divided them by the total calories (330)= 38.18181818…%

Answer(or question to Mentor): Second time answering question: There were 14gfat x 9 cal/ g fat = 126 calories of fat; 36g carbohydrates x 4 cal/g carb. = 144 calories of carbs; 15 g protein x 4 cal/g protein = 60 calories of protein. 126 + 144 + 60 = 330 calories 330/2000 = 33/200 = 16.5/100 = 16.5% of the daily calories The cheeseburger has 14g fat + 36 g Carbs + 15 g protein = 65 grams. The fat was 14/65 = .215 = 21.5 % of the total cheeseburger.

Answers to the challenge problem…

Answer(or question to Mentor): As you told me to work backwords well, here it goes. Ok if there were three left and Miles had just eaten 1/2 of what was left so there was 6 nuggets left when miles got it. Before him Juan ate 3/4 equaling 24. (I got that by multiplying 6 times 4 because that is how many nuggets were left when it got to miles) Before that Ralph ate 1/3 or 36 ( if there were 24 when Juan got there that meant that each third was 12). So if there was 6 nuggets in each package or carton or whatever you would like to call it (6 nuggets are in each carton today) That would mean Lani bought 6 packages of 6 nuggets! The bad thing is she only got three. :(! Thanks for the help!!!!!!! ~Jordan~

Answer(or question to Mentor): The answer to the challenge question is: There were 36 nuggets in the bucket to begin with. I got my answer by drawing a diagram. Because Miles ate half of what was left and passed 3 McNuggets back to Lani, he ate 3 McNuggets. Since each of the fractions could be divided into evenly into12 I made it 12 units of 3. Ralph ate 4 units, Juan ate 6 units, Miles ate 1 unit and passed 1 unit back to Lani.

Answer(or question to Mentor):
Challenge: I worked this problem backwards. First I knew that 3 nug (mcnuggets) were left. Miles ate 1/2 of of the mcnuggets to = 3 which means there was six mcnuggets when he got his paws on them. Wan ate 3/4 of the mcnuggets before miles to equal six so he had to have chugged 18 of them leaving six that means there were 24 before he got his muffs on them. And when ralf got his mugs on the bucket he ate 1/3 before passing leaving 24. So, Ralph gobbled 12 Mcnuggets because 1/3 of 36 is twelve.
These people must have been preeeeeety fat! haha!

Answer(or question to Mentor): *Challenge* For this I drew a diagram. SInce 1/3, 3/4n and 1/2 have a common denominator of of 12, I drew a box with 12 separated groups. These fractions then change to 4/12, 9/12, and 6/12. If the first guy ate 4/12, then I shaded in 4 of the squares, leaving 8. then he ate 9/12 or 3/4 of what was left 3/4 of 8 is 6. So, I shaded in 6 more squares, leaving two. Then, the next guy ate half of what was left, so I shaded in one more square. With one square left, there was 3 pieces. Inductively, I multiplyed three and 12 since if three was in one square and there was 12 squares. So, Lani had 36 pieces of chicken to start with. ~Jessica~

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge Solution: 36 Chicken McNuggets. Challenge Rationale: Let X = the total # of McNuggets bought. After Ralph ate his portion (1/3 of the bucket), there was 2/3 of the bucket left, or 2/3 * X. After Juan ate his portion (3/4 of the amount received from Ralph), that left ¼ of the amount received from Ralph, or ¼ * 2/3 *X. After Miles ate his portion (1/2 of the amount received from Juan), that left ½ of the amount received from Juan, or ½ * ¼ * 2/3 * X. I know the amount left after Miles ate was 3 McNuggets, so I know 3 = ½ * ¼ * 2/3 * X. Next I need to multiply all the fractions, ½ * ¼ * 2/3 = 2/24 or 1/12. Then I know 3 McNuggets = 1/12 * X. To solve for X, I multiply both sides of the equation by 12, so 12/12 * X = 3 *12, or X = 36 McNuggets.

Answer(or question to Mentor): Challenge: If 3 nuggets are left after 1/2 were eaten by Miles, miles must have had 6 from Juan. Juan had eaten 3/4 of the nuggets, and left 6. 6 then was 1/4 of what he had started with, so 6 x 4 = 24, so he started with 24 from Ralph. Ralph had eaten 1/3, which left 24. 24 then is 2/3 of what he started with. 2/3 x = 24. 24 x 3 divided by 2 = 36, so there were 36 nuggets to start with.
